The Old Adobe Union School District will be holding meetings on Sept. 24 and Oct. 17 for families interested in learning about the possible creation of a Spanish/English dual immersion program during the 2008-2009 academic year.
Dual immersion involves students being taught the regular school curriculum in two languages. The Old Adobe program would start with a cadre of students entering kindergarten and first grade, and eventually expand to all grade levels. The district would seek to achieve an equal balance of native Spanish and native English speakers.
The program would aim to create a challenging environment in which children learn from each other as they broaden their perspectives. Research has shown that such programs can promote high levels of academic achievement, bilingualism and cross-cultural awareness.
Both meetings will take place at Bernard Eldredge Elementary School, Room 14, 207 Maria Drive, and begin at 7 p.m. Dr. Diane Zimmerman, the district’s superintendent, and Andi Stubbs, principal of Bernard Eldredge, will provide an overview of dual immersion programs, followed by a question-and-answer session. A Spanish-English translator will be present, and childcare will be available.
Families interested in attending one of the informational meetings should fill out an interest form and return it to the office manager or secretary at their child’s school no later than Sept. 19. They then will be contacted by telephone to confirm that they will attend.
To start the program, the district is seeking a commitment from approximately 30 families so that plans can be made and enrollment can begin the first week of February 2008.
