A 21-year-old Petaluma man was arrested on Saturday after allegedly stealing a bicycle at Casa Grande High School and later brandishing a knife and punching the substantially damaging the bike owner’s truck.
The owner of the bicycle saw David McDaniel, 21, steal his bicycle at the school, but was unable to stop him as he rode away. Around two hours later, the owner saw McDaniel riding the bicycle near La Tercera Elementary School, at 1600 Albin Way, and with the assistance of a friend, attempted to retrieve it, said Sgt. Marty Frye of the Petaluma Police Department.
They seized the bike from McDaniel, who then took out a knife and again attempted to steal the bike. As they argued, McDaniel punched the hood of the owner’s truck several times, causing substantial damage.
Several people who witnessed the incident called the Petaluma Police Department, and when officers arrived, McDaniel fled on foot south through the school grounds, and toward Baywood Drive, Frye said.
Officers set a perimeter around the area, and arrested McDaniel at 4:57 p.m., as he attempted to flee toward Crinella Drive.
Officer Michael Page and K-9 partner Rico searched the school property for the knife, and Rico found it concealed in a water-catch basin in the middle of the school grounds, Frye said.
McDaniel is on probation in Sonoma County for an unrelated incident and had an outstanding warrant for his arrest for previously violating his probation. He was booked into Sonoma County Jail on the charges of armed robbery, brandishing a weapon, possession of stolen property, felony vandalism, violation of probation and obstructing a peace officer.
He is being held without bail due to his probation violation, Frye said.
