The Buzz

Wheel thank you: The Buzz got a call from an ecstatic Steve Martin, the subject of an Argus-Courier community profile last month.
Martin is the blind Mr. Fixit who started a new roadside business — called Wheel Fix It! — that gives busted bikes a new lease on life. According to Martin, “I lost count of the number of people who’ve brought their broken bikes to me to fix. It’s got to be a dozen, at least. I just wanted to thank you for the article and for helping me find new customers. I even got calls from out-of-state, from people who used to live here in Petaluma. One guy from Texas said if he was still living here, he’d give me his bike to fix.” But it gets better. Martin tells The Buzz of a particularly generous person named Rose. “She remembered seeing me on the bus every day when I used to go to Santa Rosa Junior College and we struck up a friendship,” he says. “She sent me a hundred dollars out of the blue just to help me with my business. It blew me away!” Wheel second that, Steve!

Going tray-less: Petaluma Poultry recently took another green step with the introduction of a new styrofoam- free, tray-less packaging for its line or free-range and organic chicken. It’s estimated that a family of four disposes of 120 styrofoam poultry trays each year. With 2.5 million tons of non-recyclable chemical compound found in styrofoam ending up in landfills each year, Petaluma Poultry felt removing this type of packaging was a step in the right direction. Take a dip and get fit: Citizens who enjoy the benefits of the aqua therapy and fitness program at the Cavanagh Pool are spreading the word around town by passing out flyers about the eastside swimming pool, located at G and Eighth streets. The temperature of the pool is kept at 86 degrees, which is just right for the water fitnesses classes held at 10 a.m. and noon Monday through Friday, and at noon on Saturdays. Evening classes are held at 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and an aqua aerobics class is in the works. In addition, inspired by the Sonoma County iWalk program to promote the healthful benefits of walking, Citizens for Cavanagh Pool has teamed up with Forever Aquatics and is encouraging people to enjoy those same benefits — in the water. They will present a water walking event on Aug. 8 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the pool. To learn more, call the Cavanagh Pool at 778-4536.

The last game? It is ironic that what might have been the last Little Lague game played at Carter Field, the historic home of the Petaluma National Little League, did not involve a National League team. With the Target shopping center development finally starting through the planning process, the National League’s stay at its facility at the former Kenilworth Junior High School site is in its final stage. When the shopping center comes, the National Little League will move to a new home at Petaluma Junior High School. Unless the Nationals can squeeze one more season out of the Kenilworth site, the last game was played in early July.

Alovely downtown wedding: Local couple Ashley Lucas and Jesus Maldonado exchanged vows on July 18 by the fountain in Theatre Square just outside Tres Hombres. The couple were planning to have their reception at Tres Hombres, but also fell in love with the Theatre Square courtyard and decided to hold their evening wedding there, too. “It worked out very well,”said Maureen Highland, marketing director for Basin Street Properties. “They had 100 guests seated under the archway facing the fountain. It was a gorgeous night and the weather was perfect.”
