A 26-year-old Petaluma woman died on Lakeville Highway Tuesday evening after her vehicle ran off the roadway.

The woman has not yet been identified by the CHP.

The woman lost control of her Honda Civic on Lakeville Highway near Lakeville 2 Road at approximately 5:45 p.m., striking a eucalytptus tree, CHP authorities said.

Witnesses told CHP investigators they had seen the car being driven recklessly before the collision and that it had spun out of control when turning onto Lakeville Highway from Highway 37.

“She turned right onto Lakeville Highway at a high speed and spun out,” CHP spokesman Jon Sloat said. “Until that time she was tailgating and speeding.”

Sloat did not think anyone had placed an emergency call to report the woman’s driving before the crash.

The Petaluma woman was the only occupant of the car and was declared dead at the scene.

Authorities said alcohol is being investigated as a factor in the collision because beer and hard alcohol containers were found at the site of the crash.

The incident partially closed Lakeville Highway until 7:40 p.m.
