Petaluma and Casa cross country teams dominate Sonoma County League foes

Petaluma High’s boys cross country team was perfect with both its varsity and its junior varsity squads.

Running on its home course at Helen Putnam Park on Oct. 21, the Petaluma boys placed first through fifth to beat Healdsburg and Windsor. The Trojans had a perfect 15, with Healdsburg second with 53, followed by Windsor with 63.

Hugh Dowdy led the way for Petaluma, running 18:43, followed quickly by Forest Shaffer in 18:45; and Clark Bernard, Ryan Douglas and Kevin Poteracke, all in 18:46. The sixth Petaluma runner, Prescott Nicoll, was timed in 19:14.

The Petaluma junior varsity also placed one through five with its counting runners. Bandon Mondo was first in 20:15, followed by Sebastian Vogner in 20:29, Anthony Montoya in 29:59, Tyler Mather in 21:24 and Brett Short in 21:36.

Other Petaluma runners were Seth Yungert (21:52), Jesse Shaffer (23:14), Bryce Bargesi (23:15), Zane Cooper (24:34) and Yuriel Gonzalez (24:36).

The Petaluma girls scored 23 to defeat Windsor (49) and Healdsburg (60).

Isabell Andrade won the race in 21:18. Francesca Honey was third in 22:15, followed by Kirby Franklin, fourth in 23:06, Hailey Lynch, sixth in 23:16 and Kaylin Paretti, ninth in 24:04.

Also running well for Petaluma were Dorthea Parker, 10th in 24:08 and Sierra Haddock, 12th in 27:28.

For the Petaluma junior varsity girls, Brittany Thiede ran 25:46, Tawani Cox 26:08, Katie Debernardi 26:09, Nancy Larsen 27:08, Andie Dolcini 27:32 and Sarah Mather 29:56.

Casa also dominates

Casa Grande’s boys and girls teams also dominated a Sonoma County League run, defeating Analy with both the boys and girls varsity runners.

The Casa Grande boys ran perfect. Spencer Hall was first in 16:20, followed by Austin Minnick in 17:14, Phil Johnson in 17:15, Tyler Harwood in 17:16 and Duncan Bradley in 17:51. They were followed by Daryn Cubba, sixth in 17:53; Jared O’Brien, eighth in 18:21; Dan Moore, ninth in 18:28; and Ben Tarango, 16th in 19:41.

The Casa Grande varsity girls just missed a sweep, finishing with 17 points to 43 for Analy. Jacque Taylor (18:24), Dominique Ratto (19:08) and Eva Luu (20:25) were one, two, three, followed by Taylor Falk, fifth in 21:10; Melanie Cox, sixth in 21:49; Camille Gasser, seventh in 22:09; and Chloe Hall, 11th in 23:25.

The Casa Grande junior varsity boys defeated Analy 26-31. Brian Baird was second in 19:12, followed by Vinny Fausone, third in 19:40; Jack Fausone, fourth in 20:03; Connor Kelly, eighth in 20:38; Austin Mattos, ninth in 20:59; Luke Webb, 10th in 21:12; Shaffer Battaglia, 11th in 21:17; John Finley, 13th in 21:36; Tim Sit, 15th in 21:46; Sean Singer, 23rd in 26:06; and Corey Buck, 25th in 27:39.

The Casa Grande junior varsity girls were hit by the flu and ran an incomplete team, but the four who did run ran well, finishing first through fourth. Izzy Garay won the race in 24:34, followed by Amy Jin in 25:14, Christina Debrunner in 25:16 and Mackenzie Tarango in 26:53.

Hall wins at Mt. Sac

Hall ran a peronal best time of 16:04 to win his division in the Mt. Sac Invitational.

Hall’s win highlighted a strong effort by the Casa Grande boys in their Division 2 race. Harwood ran a personal best 18:06 to finish 13th. Johnson ran 29th in 17:34, Cubba 37th in 17:48, O’Brien 53rd in 18:23, Moore 54th in 18:25 and Tarango 55th in 19:41.

Taylor was fourth in the individual sweepstakes race, running 17:32. Ratto in 19:13 and Falk in 21:12 had personal best times. Ratto was 30th and Falk 78th.

Luu was 55th in 20:09, Cox 85th in 21:45, Hall 87th in 22:08 and Gasser 91st in 22:32.
