What's coming up in high school sports.

The fall sports season is winding down, but what remains is some of the best competition of the season, as local teams battle for league championships and high positions in the North Coast Section playoffs.

By the end of next week, the North Coast Section playoffs in boys and girls soccer get underway.

Football still has three weeks left in the regular season, but those three weeks are huge, with every game carrying potential championship implications.

THURSDAY

TOUGH CHORE FOR T-GIRLS

The Petaluma High girls soccer team faces a tough test as it tries to finish out its Sonoma County League season on a positive note, going to Sonoma to meet a Lady Dragon team that is very difficult to beat on its home turf. The St. Vincent and Tomales girls are both at home, Tomales hosting Calistoga, and St. Vincent facing Cloverdale.

The Petaluma and St. Vincent volleyball teams also face big challenges, with the Lady Mustangs home to St. Helena, while Petaluma goes to Windsor.

Petaluma’s tennis team finishes the regular season with a big match at Analy.

FRIDAY

FOOTBALL AT HOME

Petaluma and Casa Grande keep the football fun at home, with the Trojans hosting Sonoma Valley, while the Gauchos take on Windsor.

SATURDAY

MUSTANGS STAY HOME

St. Vincent’s football team plays the second of three home football games in a row, entertaining St. Helena while trying to remain unbeaten in NCL I South play. Tomales will attempt to extend its five-game winning streak, but must do it on the road, playing at Point Arena.

That leaves the Tomales turf open for the boys soccer team and its game against Calistoga.

TUESDAY

SV NET TEAM AT KELSEYVILLE

The St. Vincent volleyball team steps out of league play to take on Kelseyville in a non-league match in Lake County.

WEDNESDAY

NCS SOCCER PLAYOFFS START

The North Coast Section soccer playoffs begin, with both Casa Grande and Petaluma hoping for a first-game bye and home games. Regardless, it will be a thrill for them and North Central League I South champion St. Vincent to participate.

There is also a big cross country meet at Helen Putnam Park, where Casa Grande and Petaluma clash. The girls race should be especially exciting, with Petaluma’s young girls challenging Casa Grande’s veteran and talented-loaded Lady Gauchos.

THURSDAY

SCL TENNIS TOURNAMENT

The Sonoma County League tennis tournament will be played at Santa Rosa Junior College, featuring the best players from each team in the league.

Two more league volleyball matches are on the agenda, with Calistoga at Tomales and St. Vincent wrapping up the regular season at Cloverdale.
