A Petaluma man accused of murdering his wife in a domestic dispute told emergency dispatchers she was insane and was attempting to attack him before he shot her.
Kenneth Mullennix, 49, placed the 911 call late Jan. 9, informing police he had just killed Buapha Mullennix, 36. He also said the couple's two children, ages 10 and 18, were in the McNeil Avenue house.
“My wife tried to attack me,” Mullennix told dispatchers, according to information contained in a police search warrant for their home. “She's insane. I shot her and killed her.”
The warrant provides new details on the events they may have led up to the shooting and reveals a home filled with weapons, cash and prescription drugs.
Police arrived to find Mullennix talking on a cell phone. He was arrested without incident. His wife was found lying on the ground in a pool of blood with an apparent injury to her right eye.
About six feet from her body was a Glock .357 hand gun registered to Mullennix. It was on a chair next to a desk top computer that police later seized as evidence.
A preliminary breath test showed Mullennix had a blood-alcohol content of .235 percent, three times the legal limit were he driving a car. Police found a near-empty tequila bottle in the house as well as discarded liquor bottles in the recycling.
He has pleaded not guilty to the murder charge and is scheduled to appear in court Thursday to set a preliminary hearing date.
Meanwhile, search warrant documents show Mullennix possessed a number of firearms, including one thought to be an illegal SKS assault rifle with a 30-round magazine. In addition to the Glock and rifle, officers seized a .357 magnum revolver, a 12-gauge shotgun and miscellaneous gun paperwork including a handgun safety card.
Officers also confiscated “bludgeons, ropes and other restraining devices” as well as unspecified written statements showing “ill feelings, threats and other possible motives” for the killing.
Additionally, they took $3,200 in cash contained in a silver briefcase in the master bedroom along with anti-depressant drugs and pain killers prescribed to the victim. Also seized were articles of clothing from the victim and samples of blood found on the walls and furniture. A suspected bone chip was taken from the top of the dresser in the master bedroom.
Also, a black plastic box believed to be a GPS unit was removed from the undercarriage of a 1996 Chevy Camaro, one of three vehicles owned by Kenneth and Buapha Mullennix.
