Councilmember Teresa Barrett has announced she will seek a second term on the City Council this November.

Barrett, who was elected in 2006 and whose term ends this year, said that her time on the council has been highlighted by “hard work, brutal honesty, and responsible development.”

Barrett claimed that while her work has helped accomplish much in the last four years — including the adoption of the General Plan and the "streamlining" of the development review process — more work remains once the city's comprehensive study on economic development is released in the coming months.

“We need to be planning appropriately for the economic recovery, so that Petaluma is able to take advantage of our opportunities to create good paying jobs associated with redevelopment and the SMART commuter rail service,” Barrett said in a press release.

Four other candidates — former fire chief Chris Albertson, retired telecommunication executive Ray Johnson, former council member Karen Nau, and current council member Mike Harris — have also declared their candidacies, and will all run on a platform of encouraging business. Chamber of Commerce board member Jeff Mayne and Councilmember David Glass will run for mayor.

Four seats on the council — including the mayor's post — are up for election in November. Mayor Pam Torliatt and Councilmember David Rabbitt are running for county supervisor, and will be vacating their council seats. Both Harris and Barrett's terms are up this year.

The filing deadline for candidates is Aug. 6.
