Spotlight on Copperworks: The HGTV show “Carter Can” airing Saturday, Sept. 4 will feature a copper-range hood from Petaluma’s own Copperworks. The Sonoma model range hood was chosen by the producers as an example of how a kitchen can be transformed with a few changes. The show, hosted by Carter Oosterhouse, focuses on remodeling projects that can have an impact without a large budget. This week’s episode features a Southern California home getting a new kitchen, and the polished copper hood from Copperworks takes center stage. “It’s one of my favorite designs and looks great with a smooth copper finish,” said Copperworks president Joe Cain. “We had this hood on display in our shop when the producers called and I was happy to work with them.” Cain added that earlier this year, one of the company’s zinc countertops was featured on the DIY Network show “House Crashers.” Additionally, an island version of the hood will be featured on a primetime, major network show. “We are very happy to have this national exposure, especially during this slim economy,” he said. “Our craftsmen put their heart into their work and to see the finished product on TV is a real thrill.” Founded in 1981 by John Strong, Copperworks manufactures range hoods and countertops in zinc, brass, stainless steel and, of course, copper.

Outrigger canoe team honors Ella Bisbee: Team Kalakoa will be racing its outrigger canoe at the annual Queen Lili Race in Kona, Hawaii on Sept. 4 in honor of 8-year-old Petaluman Ella Bisbee, who died from injuries sustained during a fall on June 25. Petaluma resident Terri Rivero, who lived in Hawaii before moving back recently, was one of the Bisbees’ close neighbors. “Ella, for as young as she was, touched so many people,” said Rivero in an e-mail. “Not to mention her mom, Carrie, dad, Nate, and little sister, Catherine, are dearly loved by all.” The outrigger canoe will carry a special lei and blessing for Ella during the race. Team Kalakoa members will be wearing white and pink jerseys, and a seahorse tattoo on their right arm. “For many paddlers the water’s healing and energizing power brings us together,” Rivero said. “At the Queen Lili Race, Team Kalakoa is taking that healing energy to honor Ella’s life and to show their support to her family.”

From Petaluma to president of Peru? “When Miguel Hilario worked at Petaluma People Services Center’s youth employment program in 1999 and 2000, he used to say, ‘One day, I will return to Peru and become the first indigenous person to be president,’” said Elece Hempel, associate executive director of the PPSC. Hilario left Sonoma County and went on to study at Stanford and Oxford universities with that goal. Now, he is running for president of Peru in the 2011 election. Hilario is a member of the Shipibo-Konibo tribe, which calls the Peruvian village of Nueva Samaria home. His American studies began at Santa Rosa Junior College in 1993. He graduated from Sonoma State University in 1999, and became the first man from his tribe to graduate from a U.S. university. Hilario founded the Pluralist Party of Peru last October, which is dedicated to sustainable development, fighting corruption and bringing social and economic justice to the Amazonian people. He plans to officially launch his presidential campaign in January.
