Press Democrat wine writer Peg Melnik scopes out restaurant wine lists around the North Bay, looking for good value and the occasional splurge. This week's picks (prices are retail; restaurant markup varies):
Gloria Ferrer NV Carneros Blanc de Noir, 12.5 percent alcohol, $20. A lovely bubbly with a great mousse. Aromas and flavors of tart cherry, black cherry, strawberry, vanilla, cola and mineral. Creamy texture. Long finish.
Bedrock Wine Co., 2009 Sonoma Valley Rosé of Mourvedre, 13.5 percent, $22. Not to be missed. This rosé has notes of raspberry, watermelon and yes, smoke. It's ripe and spicy and yet crisp. Bravo.
J Brut Rosé NV Russian River Valley, 12.5 percent, $30. A crisp sparkler, with aromas and flavors of strawberry, cream and mineral. Bright and lively. Nice mousse.
DVX, 2002 Mumm Napa, 12.5 percent, $55. Aromas and flavors of apple, pear and mineral. Focused. Nice length.
Switchback Ridge, 2006 Peterson Family Vineyard Merlot, 14.8 percent, $56. Notes of blackberry jam, herbs and spice. Seamless texture. Lingering finish.
