Slippery, wet roads are believed to have contributed to a flurry of early morning crashes around Sonoma County on Thursday, including several rollover accidents that closed busy roads.
A 7:25 a.m. collision on River Road at Fulton Road left one vehicle overturned with an unconscious driver inside and another road blocking the roadway, according to initial reports.
D Street south of Windsor Drive in Petaluma also was closed for an extended period because of a vehicle that crashed into a power pole at 6:25 a.m. and brought live wires down onto the roadway, the CHP said.
The road was still closed an hour later, and even emergency personnel were having trouble getting in to help because of the downed power lines, the CHP said.
In Larkfield, a vehicle rolled and landed on its roof on the sidewalk off Old Redwood Highway south of Faught Road, the CHP said.
Another vehicle overturned on Highway 1 north of Jenner on the Sonoma Coast, blocking northbound traffic for about 20 minutes, though the road was clear by 7:38 a.m., the CHP said.
CHP Officer Steve Fricke said motorists need to slow down and leave more space between cars to adjust for slick conditions.
“Usually speed is a primary factor in these crashes,” he said.
