A three-hour standoff in northwest Santa Rosa Friday morning ended peacefully when a man who had barricaded himself in an attic surrendered to law enforcement authorities, Santa Rosa police said.

Detectives had set out at about 7 a.m. to search two apartments at the Villa Rosa Condominiums near Coffee Lane, Sgt. Rainer Navarro said.

In a Playa Court apartment, detectives heard a man inside and ordered him to come out, Navarro said.

Several people told police the man, 34-year-old Rickey Estrada, may have a gun. A trained police negotiator was called to talk Estrada into surrendering, but Estrada holed up in an attic and didn’t respond.

Plata Court was cordoned off for about three hours as the negotiator tried to talk with Estrada, who was on probation for having a firearm while intoxicated with a controlled substance, Navarro said.

Estrada surrendered about three hours later at 10 a.m., Navarro said.

Officers found no gun in the residence, but they did find methamphetamine and drug and gang paraphernalia, he said.

Estrada, a known gang participant, was being held without bail at the Sonoma County Jail on suspicion of methamphetamine possession, resisting arrest and other drug charges as well as violating the terms of his probation for the conviction as well as a Mendocino County warrant for a probation violation, Navarro said.
