A Penngrove couple is scheduled to be arraigned Friday on charges of physically abusing their 18-month-old child.

Lyndsay Patricia Colula, 20, and Jesus Daniel Colula, 26, were arrested Wednesday at their Sturtevant Drive home on suspicion of child cruelty.

The arrests stemmed from injuries the child suffered, including a broken bone, several fractures, bruises and a contusion.

The injuries were discovered when the child -- whose gender was not disclosed -- was brought to a doctor for a "well-baby" checkup.

Sonoma County sheriff's investigators said the couple were sole caretakers of the infant, but did not seek medical attention for the injuries for at least a week.

"After questioning, neither parent could provide a plausible account for the severe injuries, or why they neglected to provide immediate attention to the baby," Lt. Dennis O'Leary said in a statement.

After the doctor's visit, the infant was taken into protective custody and transported to Oakland Children's Hospital, where more injuries were discovered.
