McNear School third grader Portia Lipsie, 9, had no thoughts of being rewarded when she proposed a fund raiser to aid the dogs and cats at the Petaluma Animal Shelter.
But the rewards have come in the form of yelps of joy and meows of contentment from the animals who enjoyed the food, toys, beds and other items Portia was able to buy from the $225 she raised from selling cookies, lemonade and raffle tickets.
She worked on the project with her friend, Teri Drobnick, who works with the third-grader through Petaluma’s Mentor-Me program.
“I saw the animals on TV, and I knew the animal shelter didn’t have much staff, so I went to Terri and said, ‘come on, let’s have a fund rasier so we can buy the animals a whole bunch of stuff,’” Portia explained.
When the 9-year-old brought in her gifts, she was treated to a tour of the shelter and got to meet “every one of the dogs and cats.” Not that she doesn’t have animals at home. “I have two cats and a tortise,” she said.
“And two fish and a frog,” reminded her older brother, Matius.
The fund-raising adventure is just one of the fun things Portia and her mentor share.
Both agree the Mentor-Me program is a big part of their lives.
“I get to spend time with Teri, do art and a lot of fun things,” said Portia.
“It is fun for me to have a young child in my life,” Drobnick said, noting that her daughters are both now in their 20s.
“I have always heard such wonderful things about the Mentor Me program, and I really wanted to make a positive difference in some child’s life. I don’t know who gets more out of this, her or me.”
