Steve and Carol (Chatham) Skold celebrated their 50th anniversary with family and friends at a dinner party held at Roberto's Tratoria Lupo in Santa Rosa.

Carol was raised in Stockton, Steve in San Francisco and Los Gatos. The couple met at a San Jose State water polo game in which Steve was one of the players. Carol jokingly refers to herself as a groupie and was thrilled when she was introduced to Steve by a friend. They went to a football game at San Jose State on their first date. After going together for 11 months, they were married on August 25, 1962, in Redding.

Steve served in the Naval Air Force from 1963-1967, doing three tours in Vietnam. After his discharge, they moved to Santa Rosa in 1967. From 1968-2000, Steve worked for State Farm. Carol owned a gift shop in Montgomery Village from 1979-1990.

Steve is a model railroader and enjoys sailing. They are both active members of the Inverness Yacht Club. Carol volunteers at Luther Burbank Home and Gardens and enjoys knitting and quilting.

Family members include: daughter, Kelly Rettinhouse, and her husband, Mike, of Vallejo; daughter, Kristen Skold, of Santa Rosa; and daughter, Kai Jensen, and her husband, Chad, of Santa Rosa. They have four grandchildren.

They have made several trips to Europe and the Caribbean, and try to get to Kauai yearly. In addition, they like to take long road trips throughout the United States with particular interest in visiting Civil War sites.

Their advice for a long and happy marriage is to encourage and support each other in their own interests, hobbies and activities; and also to make time to enjoy things together.
