A man walking on a dark west Sonoma County road Thursday was hit by an oncoming van and was flown to a Napa hospital with head injuries, CHP officials said.

Skid marks on westbound Occidental Road past Irwin Lane marked where the driver of a 1996 Ford Club Wagon hit the brakes.

The driver, 21-year-old Anthony Eich of Sebastopol, told authorities that he was about 10 feet from the man when he appeared in the headlights, CHP Officer Jeremy Finnerty said.

Eich told officers the man was walking west about three to four feet into the lane, Finnerty said.

Finnerty estimated Eich was traveling at the speed limit,

45 mph, when he began applying the brakes.

The pedestrian briefly lost consciousness and had head injuries but became alert enough to try to get up, Finnerty said. He was flown to Queen of the Valley Hospital in Napa, Finnerty said.

The pedestrian's name and condition were not available late Thursday.
