etaluma High softball pitcher Dana Thomsen signed a letter of intent Wednesday afternoon with Humboldt State University at her home in Petaluma.

Thomsen, an All-Empire first-team selection as a junior, made an unofficial visit to the Arcata campus in September 2011, attending a Lumberjack football game.

“I fell in love with the campus,” Thomsen said. “The redwoods, all the nature there, it's a gorgeous place. It's far enough away from home but it's also close to home. At the football game I sat in the stands, and even though it was freezing .... it felt kind of like a high school atmosphere, and I love high school atmosphere.”

Thomsen, who carries a 3.2 GPA, visited Humboldt a second time last June and made her verbal commitment at that time.

“I dreamt of playing college softball as a kid but it wasn't like I thought it would ever happen,” Thomsen said. “But when I got to the NCS as a sophomore in high school, I thought maybe I had a chance. I am amazed beyond belief.”

Thomsen plans to major in either sociology, psychology or the arts.

Thomsen finished her junior season last spring for the Trojans by posting a 12-3 record with a 1.45 earned run average. Opposing batters hit only .185 off her as she struck out 124 in 101» innings. Thomsen pitched 14 complete games.
