The price of secession
EDITOR: I don’t think the pro-secession crowd (“Too form a more perfect union?” Wednesday) has thought this through.
First, this has already been tried with disastrous results. (See, generally, the Civil War).
Second, secessionist states will have to withdraw from Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid and say goodbye to any extended unemployment benefits paid by Uncle Sam.
Also, there won’t be any FEMA to help rebuild after the next Gulf hurricane. No federal funds for education or school lunch programs. No federal highway funds to improve and maintain roads.
And by the way, the U.S. will be sending a bill for maintaining the portions of interstate highways that pass through these new nations.
I have a feeling it won’t be long before these folks realize that being a part of a republic is a pretty good deal.
