Christmas is a month away, and if you don't want to end up grabbing last-minute gifts at random, you need to come up with some ideas soon.

For a change, it might be fun to search outside the usual stores, and even beyond the holiday arts and crafts fairs that pop everywhere this time of year. You could make a gift yourself; here are some places you can go to learn how:

The Pottery Studio at 632 Fourth St. in downtown Santa Rosa offers a chance to make your own one-of-a-kind gift for friends and family. Open daily except Mondays, and by appointment. Prices run from $3 to $50 per piece, plus a studio fee of $3 to $9. Information: 576-7102, thepotterystudio.net

Barbra Friedman's Washi Egg classes teach you how to make Japanese-style eggs decorated with handmade mulberry paper, beads and other ornaments. She has three classes coming up: (1) 2-4 p.m Dec. 5 at at Patisserie Angelica, 6821 Laguna Park Way, Sebastopol. $45. (2) 7-9 p.m. Dec. 5 at Village Bakery, 7225 Healdsburg Ave., Sebastopol. $35. Riley Street Art Supply in Santa Rosa offers a wide range of art classes, where you can discover how to make your own masterpiece of a holiday gift, from silkscreen greeting cards to holiday lights made from gourds. 103 Maxwell Court. Information: 526-2416, rileystreet.com.

For the kids who want make something, how about a more modest project? The Schulz Museum teaches children age 3 to 6, with an adult, how to make a gingerbread doghouse with a marshmallow Snoopy on top, and how to make holiday cards and ornaments to take home, from 10 a.m. to noon Dec. 15.

There also will be gingerbread house classes for children in grades 1 through 6, from 1 to 4 p.m. Dec. 15, and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 5 p.m. Dec. 16. Class fee: $25. Reservations: 284-1263. Information: schulzmuseum.org. 2301 Hardies Lane, Santa Rosa.
