Four high-end bicycles were stolen overnight Friday from a new downtown Santa Rosa bike shop, just a day before the store's grand opening.

The carbon-fiber road bikes were valued at $6,000, said Bicycle Czar co-owner John Woodward.

They were taken between 9 p.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. Friday by someone who used a hammer to smash a large front window. Woodward said the hammer was left on the sidewalk.

Bicycle Czar has been operating out of a Piner Road building, where it has rebuilt used bikes for resale since 2008.

Woodward called the loss heartbreaking, but said they will not be deterred, that the downtown store will open Saturday morning.

He said it has taken 18 months to get the building, on Santa Rosa Avenue at Sonoma Avenue, ready.

“We have come too far,” Woodward said. “My trophy bikes got carried out last night, it is shame that bikes that we had proud to display in a prominent display place walked out last night.”
