Petaluma Police arrested a 45-year-old man on suspicion of drunken driving and child endangerment Saturday afternoon, after an officer spotted his vehicle parked in the red zone in front of the Washington Square Safeway.
According to Petaluma Police, a community service officer observed a 1998 Dodge Caravan parked in the red zone in front of Safeway at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Dec. 29. When the officer attempted to contact the driver of the vehicle, the driver, Thad Summary, 45, of Petaluma, drove away.
Summary then fled across North McDowell Boulevard into a nearby the residential neighborhood. Officers dispatched to the area soon after spotted Summary walking back toward Safeway, looking for his wife, whom he left at the store when he fled. Upon apprehending Summary, officers discovered he was under the influence of alcohol and had two small children in his vehicle. Neither child was injured.
Summary was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and charged with child endangerment. He was booked into county jail and is being held on $25,000 bail. The children were released into the custody of their mother.
