New year brings new start for local teams

After a busy pre-league season of cross-league and tournament play, local teams get serious about the business of basketball with the start of league play next week.

Things get tough for local teams right away.

BOYS

Petaluma's Trojans are looking at the beginning of Sonoma County League play as a chance to make a fresh start after going 1-11 during their pre-league season. The record is a little deceiving. The Trojans were very close in a number of their games, losing several in the last quarter.

The Trojans get no break with their SCL start. They play at Analy against the Tigers Wednesday and visit Piner on Friday.

Casa Grande's Gauchos make their debut in the North Bay League with a game at Maria Carrillo Wednesday and face a quick showdown at home Friday against Cardinal Newman on Friday.

The Gauchos ended their pre-league season at 7-5.

St. Vincent's Mustangs begin North Central League II play with a home game against Roseland Prep on Wednesday, before playing at Sonoma Academy on Friday.

The Mustangs compiled a 3-7 pre-league record, playing several larger schools.

GIRLS

Petaluma's T-Girls begin Sonoma County League play with a new league opponent Thursday when they play at Piner against a Lady Prospector team that was in the NBL last season.

Petaluma has put together an impressive 10-3 record during its pre-league season.

Casa Grande's girls get an immediate test in its NBL debut, hosting defending league champion Maria Carrillo Wednesday night. Friday the Lady Gauchos are home to Cardinal Newman.

Playing an ultra-tough pre-league schedule, the Lady Gauchos are 6-6 going into NBL play.

St. Vincent opens North Central League II play against Roseland Prep at home on Wednesday, before playing at Sonoma Academy on Friday.

St. Vincent, is 5-3 in pre-league play.
