The Casa Grande and Petaluma High School basketball teams went their different directions with similar results Wednesday night. Casa Grande made its North Bay League debut and, despite a furious comeback, lost at Maria Carrillo, 56-50. Petaluma, playing in a Sonoma County League that no longer includes Casa, was smothered at Analy, 70-31.
Casa Grande stumbled at the outset of its games at Maria Carrillo, falling behind, 12-4, in the opening quarter and still trailing, 29-12, at the half.
The Gauchos began to turn things around in the third quarter, and made things exciting with a 24-point final period that closed the gap to six at the end.
Cetrick Yeanay led the Gauchos with 16 points, while Jake Ielmorini, who has played very well in recent games, added 15, hitting a pair of shots from outside the arc. Ielmorini also grabbed six rebounds and made three seals. Junior Drew Busse also had six rebounds and made five steals.
Maria Carrillo’s John Aitchison worked the Gauchos over inside, scoring 16 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
In Sebastopol, the Trojans were never really in the game against Analy’s hot-shooting Tigers.
After building a 19-11 first-quarter lead, Analy outscored the Trojans 23-6 in the second quarter and the outcome was determined.
The Tigers had four double-digit scorers, with Josiah Sorenson and Mohannad Halewah each scoring 15, Greenberg-Pine 14 and Gabby Dukes 10.
Jaymes Potts paced the Trojans with 12 points.
Analy is now 8-6 on the season, while Petaluma falls to 1-12.
Petaluma plays at Piner Friday, while Casa Grande hosts Cardinal Newman.
