Wine picks for week of Jan. 13

Press Democrat wine writer Peg Melnik scopes out restaurant wine lists around the North Bay, looking for good value and the occasional splurge. This week's picks (prices are retail; restaurant markup varies):
Monte Volpe, 2010 Tocai Friulano, Mendocino, 13.5 percent alcohol, $15. A tasty wine with notes of pineapple, grapefruit and honeysuckle. Lush texture. Rich finish.
Handley, 2011 Anderson Valley Gewurztraminer, 13.5 percent, $18. A striking gewurztraminer with refreshing notes of honeysuckle, guava and orange blossom. Nice balance. Dry finish.
Sebastiani, 2008 Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon, 13.5 percent, $36. A tasty cab with depth. Notes of black cherry, leather and mocha. Nice length.
Honig, 2009 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.5 percent, $45. A very complex cab with a range of flavors. Notes of black cherry, cassis and anise. Ripe tannins. Long finish.
Elu, 2009 Napa Valley Red Wine from St. Supery, 14.8 percent, $65. A complex red with layered flavors. Notes of cherry, cedar and mocha. Integrated tannins. Lingering finish.
