Fort Bragg police on Wednesday were investigating a suspicious house fire that broke out at 625 Laurel St. as one of the owners, James Johansen, was sleeping inside, police said.
The sounds of the fire awoke him shortly before noon Tuesday, and he was able to escape through a side bedroom window with the help of neighbors and others in the area, according to Lt. John Naulty.
Arriving Fort Bragg firefighters found the residence engulfed in flames.
They later determined the fire was suspicious. An arson investigation was started with the assistance of Cal Fire.
Police asked that anyone with information, or who was in the area when the fire started, contact Officers McLaughlin or Kendl at 961-2800. Anonymous tips can also be made to the Crime Tip Hotline at 961-3049.
