Press Democrat wine writer Peg Melnik scopes out restaurant wine lists around the North Bay, looking for good value and the occasional splurge. This week's picks (prices are retail; restaurant markup varies):
Beckmen Vineyards, 2010 Cuvee Le Bec, Santa Ynez Valley, 14 percent alcohol, $18. A red with a range of flavors. Notes of pomegranate, cherry, blackberry jam, mocha and leather. Bright acidity. Good balance.
Novy, 2010 Napa Valley Syrah, 14.5 percent, $19. A briary syrah with layered flavors. Notes of blackberry jam, herbs and spice. Nice length. Zesty finish.
Rodney Strong, 2010 Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon, 13.5 percent, $20. A tasty cab with notes of black cherry, toast, cedar and cocoa. Ripe tannins. A steal for the price.
Seghesio, 2011 Sonoma Zinfandel, 14.8 percent, $24. A pretty wine with lively fruit and bright acidity. Notes of black cherry, a hint of pomegranate, and cracked black pepper. Balanced. Lingering finish. Impressive.
Decoy, 2010 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.5 percent, $25. A tasty cab with a seamless texture. Notes of black raspberry, anise and pepper. Balanced.
