Sonoma County Sheriff's officials Wednesday identified the deputy who fatally shot a kidnapping suspect as Brian Parks.
Parks has been with the Sheriff's Office for 8 1/2 years and works in the patrol division, Lt. Dennis O'Leary said.
Parks is on paid administrative leave.
Parks shot and killed Richard Shreckengaust, 37, of Marin County on Feb. 28 after the man drove an unwilling woman from Marin County to Guerneville, according to Santa Rosa police, the agency tasked with investigating the shooting.
After Shreckengaust crashed off Odd Fellows Park Road and the woman escaped from the vehicle, deputies ordered him to put his hands out of the driver's side window, police said.
Shreckengaust initially complied but then pulled his hands back in, putting them out and pulling them back several times, officials said.
Parks shot Shreckengaust through the rear window, hitting him twice in the torso, according to police.
Parks told investigators he feared Shreckengaust had reached for a weapon in the car at some point during the encounter, police said.
Shreckengaust died at the scene.
