A 12-year-old boy on his bike escaped major injury when he collided with a motorist at a Montecito Boulevard street corner in Santa Rosa Friday morning, fire personnel said.

The Madrone Elementary School student was riding westbound on the sidewalk on the south side of Montecito when he apparently went to cross Benjamins Road while looking back to talk to a friend, fire Capt. Don Ricci said.

Initial reports indicated that a motorist headed northbound on Benjamins had just stopped at the corner before turning right onto eastbound Montecito, not realizing the bicyclist was going to enter the intersection, Ricci said.

The low-speed 7:30 a.m. collision caused the boy to roll up onto the hood of the car, he said.

The boy, whose name was not available, did not appear to have serious injuries but was taken to a local hospital because of pain in his hip, Ricci said.

The accident occurred several blocks west of Maria Carrillo High School and east of Middle Rincon Road, where Rincon Valley Middle School is located, in an area heavily trafficked on weekday mornings by vehicles, kids on foot and on bikes.
