Three people fleeing a home invasion robbery near Coddingtown Mall escaped arrest late Wednesday night despite an extensive search of the area, Santa Rosa police said.
The 10:15 p.m. robbery on Plata Court just south of West Steele Lane began when a resident of the home opened the door to someone posing as a pizza delivery person, police said.
Two masked men armed with guns then burst through the door and demanded cash, jewelry and guns from the three victims inside, police said.
One of the victims, the only male, was struck in the head with a handgun during a tussle inside the house. The trio then left with money, jewelry and guns, including a handgun and a rifle, police said. The victim did not require professional medical care, Sgt. Ryan Corcoran said.
Authorities quickly surrounded the area west of the mall.
Police saw someone running on Heidi Lane north of West Steele Lane and then located an abandoned vehicle in the street, its engine still on, Corcoran said.
Investigators recovered the majority of the stolen property — including the guns — from inside the car, he said.
But over several hours of searching the area with police dogs and the Sonoma County sheriff's helicopter, authorities were unable to locate the suspects.
The vehicle was impounded and investigators are following up leads in the case, Corcoran said.
It was unclear if the suspect who posed as a delivery person was male or female, he said.
