Santa Rosa's next city park likely will be named after the family that farmed the land for generations.
The city Board of Community Services on Wednesday voted to name the future park south of Coddingtown mall Finali Neighborhood Park. The recommendation must be approved by the City Council.
“If it goes through, I'm very, very honored,” said Tina Finali, who's father bought the land about 70 years ago.
Richard Finali, who was in the milk-hauling business, and his wife Susan, grew prunes, walnuts and hay and raised cows, chickens and horses — and two daughters — on the 28-acre property back when Jennings Avenue was a gravel road, Tina Finali said.
The family has sold most of the property to the The Wolff Co. of Scottsdale, Ariz., which has approval to build 270 apartments in a 15-building development called Range Ranch. It also will construct the adjacent 2.7-acre city park.
Finali said she knows some people are reluctant to see housing coming to a previously rural area, but said she's pleased with the design of the park.
“It'll be a very nice addition to the area,” Finali said.
