A 60-year-old Santa Rosa woman was found dead Saturday beneath the Rockpile Road bridge not far from Warm Springs Dam at Lake Sonoma. Sonoma County Sheriff's officials were investigating the death as an apparent suicide.
The woman, Becky Royer, appeared to have jumped off the north side of the bridge about 50 yards from the east end of the span, sheriff's officials said. At that point, the drop is about 100 feet to the ground, with the lakeshore another 100 yards or so to the west. The bridge crosses an arm of Lake Sonoma and provides access to a public boat ramp off Rockpile Road.
Royer's body was spotted by pedestrians on the bridge, who alerted authorities about 6 p.m.
Royer was pronounced dead at the scene. Her car, a gray Nissan Maxima, was parked in a nearby overlook parking lot.
Brent Kidder, a Sonoma County sheriff's coroner-detective, said a preliminary investigation found no evidence of foul play. The death was on a busy holiday weekend at the lake, but authorities said so far they have no witnesses.
Kidder said the woman's son had contacted Santa Rosa police on Saturday, apparently concerned about her whereabouts.
Her car keys were found in one of her pockets, and her driver's license was found in her car. No note was found during the initial investigation, Kidder said.
The last reported suicide off the Rockpile Road bridge was in 1996, according to Press Democrat archives.
