Santa Rosa police detained a burglary suspect at gunpoint Saturday afternoon after an extensive foot chase near Piner Road and Pioneer Way.

The chase, which concluded with the arrest of Charles Edward Phillips, 25, of Santa Rosa just after 2 p.m., involved multiple officers as well as the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office helicopter Henry 1.

The police were called to a house off off Piner Crest Drive when Phillips was discovered in the home. Phillips is related to the residents of the apartment but was not permitted to be there, police said.

Phillips' mother, Christine Vanoni, 44, said her son had been struggling recently with some personal and mental health issues but had not taken anything from her house.

When officers arrived to question Phillips, he ran, investigators said.

During the approximately 20-minute chase, Phillips was reportedly seen jumping fences, entering residential buildings, including a garage and, just before his arrest, walking into the Walgreens store off Marlow Road. He also attempted to hide in a pool, according to police.

After exiting the store moments later, he was arrested by officers at gunpoint near Marlow Road and Bay Village Avenue, just south of the Walgreens store.

Phillips was arrested on suspicion of burglary, police said.
