Ukiah police and fire personnel are investigating a suspicious fire that displaced the residents of eight adjoining apartments Wednesday, fire officials said.
Investigators found signs that an accelerant had been used to fuel the flames that broke out shortly before 4 p.m. at the Village Circle complex off West Gobbi Street, Ukiah Valley Fire Capt. Syd Dearborn said.
The fire started on the exterior of the building, and ran up the wall into the attic, where it began to spread and prompted a massive callout of firefighters from surrounding communities.
Firefighters largely fought the fire from the roof and two upstairs units that were lost, Dearborn said.
At least two residents were treated for smoke inhalation, he said.
