A motor home was destroyed in Petaluma Friday evening after it caught fire while being driven south on Highway 101.

Motorists alerted the driver of the 1985 Overland motor home that it was spewing smoke, Petaluma Fire Department Battalion Chief Phil Sutsos said.

The driver exited the highway around 7:45 p.m. and pulled into a parking lot in the 900 block of East Washington Street, Sutsos said.

The man and woman got out of the vehicle safely, but fire soon engulfed and destroyed it, Sutsos said.

The couple had just purchased the motor home somewhere in West County and were driving back to Vallejo with plans to live in it, Sutsos said.

“Those poor folks. That was pretty much their home,” he said.

The department was working with the Red Cross to get the family some housing and financial assistance, he said.
