A 24-year-old Petaluma man was arrested Saturday morning on suspicion of breaking into a garage and stealing a bicycle and other objects, police said.
Police were alerted to the thefts when a Howard Street resident called to report that he woke to a noise in his garage at about 8:30 a.m. When he looked out the window, he saw someone leaving the garage with a bicycle and several other personal items, police said. When the man confronted the thief, the thief fled on the bicycle, taking several other stolen items with him.
Later that morning, at 10:40 a.m., another citizen reported a suspicious person in the 100 block of Lakeville Street, with a description matching that of the thief.
Officers found a man hiding in the trees along the creek that borders Lakeville Street.
The man, Grant Douglas Lowrie, had items stolen from the garage, including hiking boots that he was wearing.
All of the items were returned to their owner, and Lowrie later admitted to the burglary, police said. They added that Lowrie is on probation in Sonoma County for an earlier, drug-related incident.
He was booked into Sonoma County jail with bail set at $40,000.
