A fire that started on a fence caused about $11,000 in damaged to a Petaluma home Tuesday afternoon.

The blaze on Northstar Drive was reported at 1:51 p.m., the Petaluma Fire Department said. Firefighters arrived to find a neighboring off-duty San Francisco firefighter pouring water on the fire with a garden hose, which limited the damage.

The Petaluma Fire Department extinguished the blaze, which had spread to the attic of the home.

There was no one home at the time, but firefighters briefly evacuated occupants of the other side of the building. There was about $10,000 in damage to the home and $1,000 in damage to its contents. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
