To the Petaluma High School volleyball team went the honor of playing the first sporting event on the new floor in the Petaluma High school gymnasium. Crosstown rival Casa Grande provided the opposition for the Lady Trojans, who didn’t disappoint, winning in three sets.
The floor is the first phase of a $300,000 project that will give the 54-year-old gym a new entrance and new bleachers.
For now, Petaluma teams are just happy playing on a shinny new floor where there are no dead spots or loose boards.
The school district has paid for the floor replacement, but doesn’t have the funds to pay for Phase II. Officials hope to raise part of those funds though the sale of the old floor and its memories.
A recommended donation for a 400-foot by 600-foot section of the floor is $500; recommended donation for a 1-foot by 1-foot section fashioned into a commemorative plague by the Petaluma High woodshop is $100.
For information on how to obtain a piece of the old gymnasium floor, contact assistant Principal Bennett Holley at 778-4944.
