Petaluma area girls are invited to join more than 375 girls from schools throughout the Sonoma County who will particpate in the Nov. 9 Girls on the Run Sonoma County 5K Run/Walk event in Rohnert Park. The run starts at 9 a.m. at the Rohnert Park Community Center. Recreational walkers as well as competitive runners are welcome to join the event.
Girls on the Run is a nationwide after-school program for third through eighth grade girls that uses the power of exercise and positive mentoring to prepare them for a lifetime of healthy living and self-respect.
“The Girls on the Run program is not only popular, but also effective. As the young girls connect to the knowledge that they are valuable, they build their endurance to run a 5K. As the girls connect with each other and the coaches, they develop a stronger belief in themselves. And when the girls cross the finish line of the season-ending 5K run/walk, they realize they can accomplish whatever they set out to do,” said Catrina Dierke, executive director of Girls on the Run.
Participating girls are given help in preparing and training for the fun run.
Girls on the Run Sonoma County, which began in 2007, organizes female volunteers to serve as role models, and the volunteer coaches meet with the girls twice a week. Girls are taught life lessons, such as how to resist peer pressure and how to make healthy decisions.
At each session, the girls play games, stretch, run, and walk and discuss important issues. The activities focus on building self-esteem, improving emotional and physical health and teaching participants to celebrate just being girls. The activities culminate in a 5K (3.1 miles) run/walk.
Online registration to participate as a runner or walker is open until Nov 5.
In-store registration and event packet pickup will be at the Fleet Feet store at 111 Third St. in Santa Rosa on Friday, Nov. 8 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Race Day registration is available from 7-8:45 a.m. at the Rohnert Park Community Center, 5401 Snyder Lane.
