The part-time Lake County deputy whom authorities say was shot by his wife Friday morning has died of his injuries.
Bob Piveronas, 66, died early Saturday morning at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital of gunshot wounds he suffered at his Lakeport home, according to Lake County District Attorney Don Anderson.
Piveronas was a retired police commander who worked for the Lake County Sheriff's Department seasonally as a marine patrol deputy.
Piveronas' wife, 63-year-old Paula Ann Piveronas, called 911 just after 7 a.m. Friday to report that she had shot her husband several times.
Shortly thereafter she was arrested by District Attorney's Office investigators on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a firearm and infliction of corporal injury on a spouse.
She was booked into jail on $700,000 bail, but was released after posting a bond before it became clear her husband had died, Anderson said.
The District Attorney's Office does not plan to immediately take her back into custody on additional charges following his death, Anderson said. She is not considered a flight risk.
“We don't think she'll take off,” Anderson said.
Instead, the agency will investigate further to see if additional charges are justified, Anderson said.
“We have a lot more work to do,” he said. “We really don't want to jump the gun on this.”
There is no doubt that Paula Ann Piveronas shot her husband, Anderson said. The question now is why.
“There no real question about that at all,” Anderson said. “Now it's just a matter of determining the cause and whether or not there was any justification for it.”
He declined to say if Paula Ann Piveronas claimed self-defense or some other motive for the shooting, which occurred in the couple's bedroom, he said.
It was not clear whether Paula Ann Piveronas, who did not immediately return a call seeking comment Saturday, had hired a lawyer.
