Will Nevin turned in a strong pitching performance in pacing Petaluma High to a 7-1 Sonoma County League win over visiting El Molino on Friday afternoon. Nevin was in complete command for the Trojans, who have won six of their last seven contests to clinch second place in the SCL.
The Trojans (9-2 in league) conclude the regular season Friday at Piner. Still ahead are the Sonoma County League Tournament, with the Trojans paired against third-place Sonoma Valley (7-4) and then the North Coast Section playoffs.
Nevin, a junior transfer from St. Vincent, picked up his fourth victory of the year despite sitting out the early season. He displayed a solid fastball with movement around the knees for most of the game. He went into the contest with a notable 0.83 earned run average.
The game was tight at 1-0 going into the bottom of the fifth inning as Lion starter Jeremy Pearson matched Nevin on the mound with a moving fast ball which limited the Trojan offense to a run on a first inning fielder’s choice.
Petaluma finally broke it open on Senior Day in the bottom of the fifth after a ball hit back to the mound was bobbled by Pearson to load the bases. Solid hits by Cameron Meyers and Ben Sanderson drove in runs and moved the line along.
Pearson then crippled his own cause with three pitches in the dirt which rolled to the backstop allowing runs to score.
Luke Wheless had a pair of hits and scored two runs for the Trojans who improved to 9-2 in the SCL with only one game remaining at Piner next Thursday.
The base hit by Sanderson kept his club leading batting average around the .380 mark.
Harrison Royall and late entry Greg Thomas also pounded out hits for the winners.
