The complexities of friendship and subjectivity of art will collide during a local performance of the one-act play “Art.”

Written in 1994 by French playwright Yasmina Reza, “Art” is the story of Serge, Marc and Yvan, three friends who each react differently to a modern painting that Serge purchases.

Appropriately, the performance will take place in a local gallery, Pelican Art Gallery at 143 Petaluma Blvd. North.

“This play takes the concept of individual taste in art and projects it onto the sensibilities that tweak friendships,” said Peter deKramer, the play’s producer. “By the time the play ends, the audience finds they may have been thinking more about the definition of friendship than the definition of art.”

“As an actor, I am allowed to play all these emotions that are both comic and tragic, depending on the circumstances of the character,” said Joe Peer, who will play the part of Marc. “It’s a journey into myself to find the truth of the character and it’s not always pleasant.”

Other actors are Al Liner (Serge) and Andre Mathieu (Yvan). Johanna Raan will read the stage notes.

DeKramer said he approached gallery co-owner Linda Postenrieder about doing the show at Pelican because of the subject and title of the play. “A play reading about art in a gallery like the Pelican can only enhance the experience,” he said.

The performance is a collaborative effort and involves no director. The actors have worked together and will perform a reading with scripts in hand.

“We both liked that the reading could potentially attract actors who might not have the time to do a longer performance because of their schedule,” said deKramer.

Though seating at the gallery is limited, Peer anticipates a full house for all three performances.

“‘Art’ is one of the best one-act plays I’ve ever read,” said Peer. “It touches on a lot of subjects and human emotions.”

“By presenting ‘Art’ as a reading in Petaluma, we are helping to increase the variety of cultural offerings in a town that has a population with a variety of cultural interests,” said deKramer.

The show will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 13 and at 8 p.m. on Friday, April 18 and Saturday, April 19.

Tickets are $7 and doors open a half hour before the show starts. Seating is limited. Visit www.dekramerproductions.com for more information.
