Hip trip

Local musician Frank Hayhurst is no stranger to helping others facing health-related financial issues. More than 25 years ago he co-founded "Musicians Helping Musicians," and over the years he has gathered musicians to play at dozens of benefit concerts, in support of musicians and their families facing a health crisis.

Now it's time for other musicians to repay the favor and help out Hayhurst in his time of need. The Petaluma resident, former owner of Zone Music, singer-guitarist, author and teacher, underwent successful hip replacement surgery on Feb. 7. The Sonoma County musical community is coming together on Sunday, March 23 with a benefit dinner and dance party to raise funds for Hayhurst's medical expenses.

The "Hip Trip" event at the Sebastopol Community Center is described as "an evening of eating, drinking, dancing, laughing and loving — along with a silent auction."

Things get underway at 5 p.m. with a "Jazz Cabaret" dinner set with Randy Quan and Tim Haggerty's Collaboration, featuring guests Sarah Baker and Allyson Paige. Food will include Rasta Dwight's barbecued chicken and vegetarian options. The dance party starts at 7 p.m., featuring Gator Nation, Uncle Wiggly, Blue Moon, Soul Fuse with Michael Barclay, Danny Sorentino, Levi Lloyd, Onye Onyemaechi, Gailene Elliott, Preston Bailey, the Bootleg Honeys and the Bronze Hog. Organizers promise that guests will be home in bed by 10 p.m.

Admission is a $10 donation at the door. The Sebastopol Community Center is located at 390 Morris St., Sebastopol.
