Details are still scarce after a Petaluma man was shot late Saturday afternoon. Police have not released the man's identity and do not know what sparked the shooting.

The man was bleeding profusely when he knocked on the door to his father's Sycamore Lane home around 5 p.m. on April 26. His father called the Petaluma Police Department, and initially reported that his son had been hit by a car.

"We determined when we got there that it was a gun shot," said Sgt. Paul Gilman of the Petaluma police, adding that the man was shot in the chest.

He was rushed to the hospital, leaving police with few clues as to what precipitated the violence.

More details will be posted as they become available.

UPDATE: Petaluma police say the victim is 17 years old and his injuries are not considered to be life threatening. The victim was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.
