A member of Petaluma High School?s class of 2003, Kevin Whitney died in Santa Barbara on June 23, 2008 at the age of 23.
During high school, he participated in wrestling, golf, track and football. His senior year, he was the starting quarterback and defensive back for the 2002 football team, which won the Sonoma County League championship.
Mr. Whitney attended Santa Barbara City College and was attending Oxnard College in pursuit of a fire technology degree. He became a certified emergency medical technician in 2007 and graduated from the Oxnard College Regional Fire Academy on April 11, 2008.
According to Santa Barbara police, Mr. Whitney died after he was pulled unconscious from the bottom of a swimming pool at an apartment complex where he had been drinking with friends. According to police, he apparently climbed over a fence to the pool area and jumped into the water. The coroner?s office determined his death to be an accidental drowning.
He is survived by his father, Brian Whitney; mother, Judith Boles; stepmother, Jamie Tanner; stepfather, Ronald Boles; sister, Laura Whitney; stepsiblings, Jon Minadeo, Courtney Boles, Jennifer Boles and Michael Boles; aunts; uncles; and cousins.
