Petaluma's Pruett brothers SCL champions

Petaluma High School's mat dominant brothers, Cole and Nick Pruett both won weight class championships to highlight Petaluma efforts in the Sonoma County League wrestling championships held last weekend at El Molino High School in Forestville.

Senior Cole, survived a marathon triple overtime battle with Richard De la Paz of Elsie Allen in the semifinals and went on to win at 140 pounds. Brother Nick, a junior, had a tough battle with Clayton Farris of Analy, but prevailed, 5-4, to win at 172 pounds.

Sonoma won the tournament with 176.5 points, narrowly holding off Analy, second with 171.5. Healdsburg was third with 166.5, followed by Petaluma with 107, Piner with 96, El Molino with 62 and Elsie Allen with 59.

"All in all it was a good day for us," said Petaluma coach Denny Plyler. Everyone of our wrestlers in both the varsity and junior varsity divisions won at least one match and scored points for us.

Cole Pruett start6ed his run to a league title with a pin of Tommy Jordan of Piner. Then came the epic struggle against De la Paz before he dominated Joel Anguiano of Healdsburg with a 14-2 major decision in the title match.

Casa Grande's Sean O'Brien won at 182 pounds to earn a title for the Gauchos in the North Bay League Tournament held at Ukiah High School.

The top three finishers in all weight classes in both tournaments advance to the North Coast Section championship coming up Friday and Saturday at Newark High School in Fremont.

Casa Grande's Nicholas Jensen was second at 195 pounds to earn a trip to the NCS Tournament. Casa's Ryan Mishler at 106 pounds and Ian Bailey at 130 pounds both finished third and will also advance to NCS.

Petaluma's Alex Waters was third at 162 pounds in the SCL Tournament to advance. His teammate, Matt Saxton, was fourth at 147 pounds, but learned that third-place finisher Shiloe Cardo of Piner will not be going to the tournament so Saxton will compete at the NCS meet.
