The Petaluma High School varsity Lacrosse team remains undefeated following a decisive win over the 2012 state champion San Jose' South Valley Chiefs. The 14-6 victory is Petaluma's eighth for the season, and the team, which finished third in the Varsity Club Lacrosse State Championships last year, has so far outscored its opponents 102-33.
Last week's game looked to be a battle at the start with a first-quarter score of 2-1 following goals by Petalumans Maxwell Krieg and Bradley Alvarez. However, a second-quarter hat trick by Eric Hunsicker and an additional point from Donavan Reece put the team up, 6-2, by halftime.
The third quarter was all Petaluma, with goals scored by a crew of players including freshmen Garrett Teagarden and Ellis Scherer as well as Hunsicker, Krieg and Reese. Goalie Hunter Mevis shut the Chiefs out with six saves in the quarter. He logged 14 saves.
The Chiefs made a too-little, too-late comeback attempt in the final quarter with a barrage of four goals, but cool heads prevailed, and additional scores by Charlie Walker, Scherer and Alvarez capped the game at 14-6. Henry Taajes provided two assists in the game.
Although the win is a feather in the team's cap, its biggest challenge may lay ahead. Petaluma faces cross-town rival Casa Grande Lacrosse Friday night at 6 p.m. at Lucchesi Field. Casa Grande is also off to an impressive start this season, having defeated its first seven opponents 107-30. The game should be an exciting display of the regions' best high school club lacrosse as both teams are strong contenders for the state title this year.
