The Rancho Adobe Fire Protection District has been honored by the Sonoma County Taxpayers Association for its fiscal practices.
The fire district was given the Spencer Flournoy Good Government Award for measures it took to save money and operate more cost effectively, it was announced Monday.
The district has been constrained financially for years and took a blow last year when its special fire tax ballot measure failed.
The taxpayers association, in an unusual step, had endorsed the tax measure. It said the district had operated in a fiscally sound manner, purchasing two water tenders for the price of one and maintaining a cheaper retirement benefit plan that other agencies.
The award is named for the founder of the taxpayers' association, Flournoy, who died in 2004.
