Petaluma capped a festive homecoming at Steve Ellison Field Friday night with a lopsided 55-6 win over outmanned Elsie Allen.
The Trojans scored on every ball possession in the first half except one and rushed to a commanding 42-0 halftime advantage. They continued to keep the visiting Lobos bottled in their own territory until the final possession of the night.
Junior kicker Greg Thomas played a big role in the victory with booming kicks into the Lobo end zone, keeping the visitors looking for any way to move the football. Thomas also converted a PAT kick after every score except the last try which was blocked.
Petaluma forced four Lobo turnovers in the first half, including interceptions by Conner Dennison and Brendan White to keep the defensive pressure on. Dennison came back in the second half to grab a second errant throw, and added a 16-yard return for a touchdown.
The Trojans jumped ahead 28-0 in the first quarter by completely controlling the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Touchdowns by Donavan Reece, Gabe Medina, Vusef Kawasmi and Nick Temple gave Petaluma a commanding lead, and Elsie Allen had no answer.
Petaluma quarterback Patrick Bailey completed four passes in the first half as the Trojans broke out more variety on offense after running the ball exclusively in a win over El Molino last week.
It became apparent that Trojan coach Rick Krist was ready to pump the brakes a bit as his squad became more conservative in keeping the ball on the ground the rest of the way.
Bailey broke an option run of 37 yards, and pitched to Reece for another touchdown before halftime. Bailey made a very unselfish toss on the final touchdown deep in Lobo territory when he could have moved into the end zone himself.
Elsie Allen finally delighted their loyal band of followers on its last series. Angelo Aviles completed a play of 80 yards by scampering through the Trojan defenders, and the Lobos were on the board.
The play was typical for the fiesty Lobos, who battled through the entire game without starting quarterback Jalen Busby, who was benched for breaking team rules.
