Several fundraisers are being organized for a Cherry Valley kindergarten student who was seriously injured in last week's fatal Highway 121 head-on crash.
Five-year-old Jazzlin Mejia suffered severe injuries to her neck and spine after an alleged drunk driver veered into oncoming traffic and crashed his Jaguar straight into the Toyota Corolla Jazzlin's father, Gustavo Mejia, was driving. Gustavo Mejia, 26, reportedly broke both of his legs and is being cared for at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. Jazzlin remains at Oakland Children's Hospital with major injuries. A passenger in the Jaguar died at the scene.
Last week, Jazzlin underwent surgery to fuse her separated spine together and is expected to stay at Oakland Children's Hospital for at least the next two months.
Jazzlin's mother, Nannette Andrade, remains in Oakland with her daughter.
Locally, several community members have started an Exchange Bank trust fund for the family. An online Paypal account has also be set up to help the family deal with medical expenses and bills incurred while the parents take time off from work.
This Friday, Nov. 8, the Mary Collins School at Cherry Valley will hold its own fundraising event, a Kids Cabaret, for Jazzlin.
Food plates will be available for $5 and $10, along with baked goods. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children.
To help the Mejia family, visit any Exchange Bank and donate to the Jazzlin Mejia Trust Fund or contribute via Paypal at jazzlinmejia.com.
