A two-vehicle crash on Lakeville Highway Wednesday morning shut down the highway for almost three hours and required five ambulances and a medical helicopter to transport injured drivers and passengers, according to the CHP and emergency dispatch records.
The 10:33 a.m. wreck was just south of Old Lakeville Road Two. The extensive closure was due to the wreckage and need to treat so many patients at the scene, said CHP Officer Jon Sloat.
CHP officers reopened the highway at 1:10 p.m.
Traffic was backed up about a half-mile in both directions and travelers were directed to Highway 37 to Highway 101 or vice versa, said Sloat.
Of 10 people treated at the scene, driver Carlos Garcia, 47, of Petaluma suffered major injuries. After he was freed from his demolished truck he was flown to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.
Five others were taken to Memorial or Petaluma Valley Hospital and five others. Four others were treated at the scene and deemed not to need a trip to the hospital, said Sloat.
Because of the number of injured, emergency officials set up a triage effort on the highway.
A preliminary investigation showed Garcia, in a Ford F-150 truck was headed south on the two-lane highway when his truck drifted over double yellow lines into the northbound lane.
He collided with a Ford F-550, a larger truck, driven by John Goodwin, 43, of Cool. The impact ripped off the driver-side wheel of the larger truck first before hitting its passenger compartment, knocking it to its right side.
The smaller truck ended up across both lanes.
Those inside the overturned vehicle were briefly trapped inside before firefighters freed them.
That vehicle, a California Conservation Corps personnel truck, carried corps employees headed for a job at a park in west Marin County.
As well as all of the medical personnel, several fire crews and CHP officers responded.
There were several crashes Wednesday throughout the county, including a two-car injury crash on Westside Road, a solo car crash on Highway 12 near Kenwood, four cars colliding on Hearn Avenue in southern Santa Rosa and six cars in a chain-reaction wreck on Highway 101 in northern Rohnert Park.
